Dogs and Torches

April 7, 2008

What a strange weekend it has been.  First of all it seems Nicholas Cage is most definitely NOT a stealer of dogs.  Apparently he was accused of seeing a chihuahua he liked the look of and shoved it in his jacket. Turns out this is definitely not much to the relief of numerous Chihuahua owners on Sunset Boulevard.

Second up was that a Free Tibet supporter had tried to steal the Olympic torch from Konnie Huq.  Now, I have no problem with the stealing of the Olympic Torch or indeed the rather fantastic attempt to put it out with a fire extinguisher (10/10 for ingenuity that man) but why Konnie Huq.  If you were to do some sort of management type thing where you put the word Olympics on the top of a flipchart and then ask a room of people to name the first 200 people that they would associate with that number I’m fairly sure the fragrant Konnie wouldn’t come up.

Is this a sign of how obese and useless we’ve become at sport that we’re now forced to get celebrities who look half decent in a tracksuit to carry the torch.  She doesn’t even present Blue Peter anymore.

Apparently Sir Trevor Macdonald and Denise Van Outen were also torch bearers.  Perhaps the British Olympic Association are thinking that in the 2012 games the sports the British get to add should be reading out loud off a bit of paper, musical theatre and making mother’s day cards.  The trials would full of primary school teachers.

Anyway this is the song that has mostly been going through my head today.  It’s by Frank Tunrer and it’s called Photosynthesis.  He’ll be in Aberdeen next Sunday and should hopefully be on my show.

The Sunday Showcase podcast is online if you’re interested you can get it here
