Ting Tings

Heard this song about three months ago, and wasn’t particularly bothered.  Now it’s in my head day and night rattling about.  Out on March 3rd.

I’ve finally made the decision to quit the day job.  A bit sooner than I thought but I’ve become more and more convinced since I said it out loud for the first time earlier today that it’s the right decision.

The thing is that it’s made me really, really sad.  I don’t know if it’s just a knock on effect of no longer having the security of a decent job.  Maybe it’s sadness because I’ll no longer be in an office.  No more buying everyone sandwiches or spending afternoons grazing on hobnobs with my fly cup while clicking minimize on facebook every time someone walks past.

It’s the cigarette breaks I’ll miss.  It’s not the the same standing on my own outside the flat.  There’ll certainly be no more small talk with the people who work in the office next to me but who after three years I still don’t know the names of.

Three years of cigarette breaks is fairly shocking when you do the maths.  Four cigarette breaks a day, each lasting about five minutes – that’s 20 minutes each working day.  100 minutes each week.  400 a month, or  6.66 hours, which in itself is proof that smoking is the work of Satan.  Three years I’ve been in this job, that’s 36 months which is 240 hours or ten days.

That’s ten days of smoking.  I’ve cheated the boss out of ten days.  That’s a holiday.  I mean, in fairness it would be a crappy holiday – staring at the ugly shed like office building opposite the comfort of my smokers hidey hole at the enterance to a garage.  Still that’s probably better than the two weeks I’m supposed to be spending in a villa in Florida this summer – ‘what shall we do today? Disneyland, again?’

Now I’m a ‘freelance’ my cigarette breaks are only me cheating time from me.  Which should make me stop but it won’t.  I fully expect to go through more and more.

By the way doing maths on smoking is only okay if you’re a smoker.  In the same way that a gay person can call another gay person a queer but it comes across as a bit nasty if a straight does it.  There is nothing worse than a non-smoker doing maths

 ”how much do you smoke a day?  20?  That’s 5.50 a pack.  That’s 27.50 a week. Christ that’s 1430 a year.  You could buy a car with that.”

Do you know how many people die because of cars?  I’ll stick with the smoking thank you.

Anyway, I am worried, and I am aware that it could all go tits up very quickly indeed.  But I have to try and then if, in two months time I’m back in some soul destroying grey office building car park staring at some other soul destroying grey office building then at least I had a shot.

new blog

This is easily the hundreth blog I’ve started.  I’m hoping that it lasts a little longer than my ‘two posts and then oh look something that looks like less work over there’ attitude of the past has allowed.

I am now all about the get up and go.  Cut me half and it says ‘get up and go - that’s what he’s all about’.
